i dont read anymore, i watch tv. watching all these broadcasts on tv has helped my game tremendously. went to Parx casino last night and folded a situation i had just saw Daniel himself get into. Daniel folded Q10 top pair when he got reraised by this asian guy on the flop, think its the 2nd episode of the new wsop main event. Daniel called out that he was getting trapped and folded. Had AQ raised to 10 got a caller. Flop Q 10 5. I bet 25, guy made it 50. Told him i was being trapped and showed him. He showed 55. Still ended up getting stacked but it saved me from sleeping a couple hours in the car while friends played. But watching the super high rollers, pca, all those other events, the commentary is amazing. Theres usually always something new to pick up and add into your game. The live one drop with Jason Summerville and Seiver commentating has a wealth of knowledge. Besides watching, playing online is a lot better than reading these books. From nj, seeing so many hands, makes you more comfortable without even noticing. Friends who a new continue to grow and feel more comfortable faster than i ever did. These books are out of date though. The game is different now than in 2000. No need to raised 3 times the blind when 2.3-2.5 works just the same. There are bits a pieces you can take from these books, but actually watching how hands get played out makes you feel a lot more comfortable than reading how they play out in a book.

So you bet the pot or more on the flop and got min raised? Bet sizing should be your next lesson.

How about learning how to trap yourself ? If a player min-bet you and you have top two on the flop... if you have already considered that he is set-mining you. You can always call to see if another card pairs you up for a full house to get the better hand over your opponent. Understanding your options of getting the best of your opponent is also a skill.
ReplyMoorman’s Book of Poker by Chris Moorman and Byron Jacobs
Chris Moorman is the only player who has won more than $11 million from online poker tournaments so when he decided to write a strategy book the poker community’s ears pricked up. This is the newest book on our list, but that does not stop it from being one of the best thanks to the input from Moorman.
The book’s co-author, Byron Jacobs, plays the hands discussed, gives his thought process which Moorman then picks apart and gives his $0.02 worth. If you buy this book you will find yourself ploughing through it in record time and will definitely become a better poker player as a result.
The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky
Most poker strategy books have a relatively short shelf life thanks to the game constantly evolving, yet despite The Theory of Poker being published in 1994 it is still very relevant.
In the book, David Sklansky talks about various theories and concepts for a number of different games and features the famous Fundamental Theorum of Poker, its implications and who it should affect how you play.
Harrington on Hold’em by Dan Harrington
The Harrington on Hold’em series – there are three books in total – were the first tournament strategy books I ever read. I read them to death. I read them so much that they were completely dog-eared by the time I moved onto something else.
While Harrington’s approach my not be hugely successful in today’s game, reading the Harrington on Hold’em series and applying its strategies to low stakes games will almost certainly yield positive results.
Super System: A Course in Power Poker by Doyle Brunson
This is the oldest book on our list having been first published in the 1970s. When Doyle Brunson first revealed his secrets, his fellow pros were not happy as they thought those who read Super System would become fantastic players and make the game they played in much tougher. They were right.

Super System is often called the Bible of Poker and rightly so, it is fantastic. You may want to check out Super System 2 for an updated version, which contains a few more game varieties and new strategists.
Every Hand Revealed by Gus Hansen
When Gus Hansen entered the 2007 Aussie Millions Main Event he decided to note every hand that he played. Amazingly, he went on to win the tournament and its $1,500,000 first place prize and Every Hand Revealed was born.
Hansen plays a very aggressive style that is highlighted in this book. Even if you do not adopt Hansen’s strategy yourself, it is a highly interesting read and a rare insight into a great poker mind.
The Mental Game of Poker by Jared Tendler and Barry Carter
The Mental Game of Poker and its sequel are THE poker books to have when it comes to the mental side of the game. If you have every suffered from tilt, a lack of motivation or feel that you’re not developing as a poker player as much as you should then buy these books.
I cannot stress how amazing these two books are and would go as far as saying if you can only afford one book from our list to buy this one (and get someone to buy you the sequel). It will do wonders for your game and for your whole mental side of life.
Kill Phil by Lee Nelson and Blair Rodman
Kill Phil and the sequel Kill Everyone were seen as ground breaking when they were first released. Prior to these book, tournament strategists suggest a tight-aggressive approach to MTTs but Lee Nelson came along and told everyone to be aggressive in order to be successful. Turns out that he was correct.
Elements of Poker by Tommy Angelo
Elements of Poker is a superb book and one that really thinks outside of the box. Instead of hand examples and strategies of that nature, Tommy Angelo focusses on subjects such as breathing properly, preventing tilt, and many other aspects of this beautiful game. There are some traditional poker strategy sections, but the other areas are pure gold and worth the purchase price alone.

No Limit Hold’em: Theory and Practice by David Sklansky and Ed Miller
This was one of the first books to focus on no limit Texas Holdem cash games and it does so brilliantly. Covering subjects such as manipulating pot sizes implied odds, reading hands, and manipulating players to play badly, No Limit Hold’em: Theory and Practice is a great book and one that should be in your collection.
Ace On The River by Barry Greenstein
Barry Greenstein’s Ace On The River isn’t a traditional poker strategy book, instead it is an advanced guide aimed at improving your game. While it covers some hand histories where you make the call as to what play you should make, Greenstein also covers how to manage your bankroll, how to balance poker with family life and sex – how many poker books can brag about that?
